Okay, it was in Iowa, but that doesn’t mean this doesn’t happen all over the country.
Years ago, I got a call from a guy who wanted to see one of my listings. I said I’d be happy to show the house to him, but we’d need to meet at my office first. When he asked why I wouldn’t meet him at the property – I was the first agent who refused to meet him sight-unseen at a listing – I explained that it was for safety reasons.
I told him I was sure he was a very nice guy, but it just wasn’t worth the risk to my own safety. He said he’d never thought about it and maybe there were a lot of foolish agents out there.
He then met me at my office. In the course of finding out his needs, I discovered that he didn’t really have any money – he just wanted to look at houses in case, you know, someday he got some money. So it was doubly good that we met at the office 🙂
