Today’s gorgeous weather got me thinking about being outdoors, getting a start on spring yard chores and then I got one more email warning me about Formosan Termites in mulch. I’ve received a ridiculous number of them over the past week or so. Perhaps someone has sent it to you, as well.
It’s Not True.
The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry issued a press release about this rumor, saying that a quarantine was put in place last fall to keep Formosan termites from spreading. They also said that they are being inundated with calls about the rumors.
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten an email like the Formosan termite one that was real or true. I can’t believe how many people I know forward this stuff just in case it’s true. It takes a very short time to look it up on Snopes or even in Google to check it out. Take a moment to verify the information before passing it on.
I promise you will never get an email from me like this unless it has been thoroughly verified by me.
I will say that spending a little time on these urban legend sites is entertaining. It’s amazing what kinds of things we will tell one another. Check out HoaxBusters.com and DarwinAwards.com for a little light reading. DarwinAwards are actually true, but they’ve included internet hoaxes as well.
Too nice a day to spend on the internet, though. Go outside!
