TLC for Your Old (or not-so-old) House

I’ve recently gotten very interested in old houses. Well, I’ve always been interested, but it’s a lot more focused these days, since I was appointed to the Prince George’s Historical and Cultural Trust.

I live in an old house. Not a historic one, just an old one. Lots of the new things in Home Depot or Lowes just don’t seem to fit. So I’m often searching for new sources for old things.

My all-time favorite magazine is This Old House. I always find something in each issue that I can use, either for my clients or in my own home. When I hear the magazine clunk through the mail slot, I generally stop whatever I’m doing and take a break find out what’s in the new issue.

I’ve found a terrific website called OldHouseWeb.com. They have an RSS feed for product reviews and I’ve already found an item or two that I can probably live without, but they sure intrigue me. (You don’t even want to know how many clippings I have on things that intrigue me but that I’ll probably never buy.)

Another neat site is OldHouseJournal.com. Oh yeah, and OldHouses.com.

Personally, I like an eclectic blend of old and new. But I’m a push-over for old glass doorknobs and the other kinds of things you’ll see on these websites. Have fun surfing!
